The 1-Day Mabamba Birding Safari offers bird enthusiasts a thrilling opportunity to observe one of Uganda's most sought-after species, the Shoebill, in its natural habitat. Located on the shores of Lake Victoria, Mabamba Bay is renowned for its extensive papyrus swamp, which serves as the perfect home for the elusive Shoebill, as well as numerous other water birds. The day will be spent navigating through the swamp in a traditional motorized canoe, guided by a local expert from the Mabamba area.
Your day begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel, followed by a scenic drive to Mabamba Bay, located approximately 1.5 hours from Kampala. Upon arrival, you will meet your local guide, who will provide you with insights into the region’s birdlife and guide you throughout the day.
The highlight of the day is a boat ride in a traditional canoe through the papyrus swamp. As you glide through the water, the guide will help you spot the elusive Shoebill, known for its striking appearance and distinct shape. The Shoebill is often found wading through the swamp, hunting for fish and other aquatic prey. You’ll also have the opportunity to observe a variety of other waterbirds and species that thrive in the wetlands.
Apart from the Shoebill, other notable bird species to look out for include the Angola Swallow, Swamp Flycatcher, Olive-bellied Sunbird, Grey-rumped Swallow, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, African Fish Eagle, and many others. As you make your way through the swamp, your guide will share fascinating facts about these birds and their behaviors.
Throughout the day, there will be numerous opportunities for birdwatching as you cruise the waterways, with your guide pointing out unique species. After your experience of spotting the Shoebill and other fantastic bird species, you will return to your hotel, making stops at various locations for additional birding opportunities along the way.
