This 5-day adventure takes you deep into the heart of Uganda’s natural wonders, combining an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with a thrilling wildlife safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Each day brings unique encounters with Africa’s most iconic species and breathtaking landscapes.
After an early breakfast at your accommodation in Kampala, meet your guide at 6:30 AM and begin the journey to Queen Elizabeth National Park, located 417 km southwest of Kampala (approximately 7 hours’ drive). Your first stop will be at the Uganda Equator Crossing in Kayabwe, 77 km from Kampala. Here, you’ll witness a fascinating water experiment demonstrating the separation between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and have the opportunity to take memorable photos standing in both hemispheres.
Continue the drive to Igongo Cultural Center near Mbarara for a delicious traditional lunch, featuring organically produced local dishes. You can also take an optional tour of the Erijukiro Museum to learn about the rich heritage of southwestern Uganda’s tribes. The journey resumes through Mbarara Town, passing scenic views of the Bunyaruguru Crater Field and Kalinzu Forest, where optional stops for sightseeing and photography are available.
Arrive at Queen Elizabeth National Park in the evening for relaxation, dinner, and an overnight stay at your lodge.
Start your day with an early breakfast and head out for a morning game drive at 7:00 AM through the Kasenyi Plains and Queen’s Mile. This area offers excellent wildlife viewing, with opportunities to see elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, warthogs, and hyenas. Bird enthusiasts will enjoy spotting some of the park’s 600 bird species, including the Martial Eagle, African Skimmer, and Black Bee-eater.
After the game drive, return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, proceed to the Mweya Jetty for a Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise at 2:00 PM. This 2-hour cruise takes you along the 45 km channel connecting Lake George and Lake Edward, offering close-up views of hippos, crocodiles, and diverse bird species. It’s a perfect opportunity for photography, birdwatching, and observing wildlife in their natural habitat.
After breakfast, check out from your lodge and begin the scenic drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey offers stunning views of southwestern Uganda’s rolling hills and terraced landscapes. Arrive in Bwindi in the afternoon, check into your lodge, and relax. This is your chance to prepare for the highly anticipated gorilla trekking adventure the next day. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge.
After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking guidelines. At 8:00 AM, embark on the trek through dense rainforest and steep, rugged terrain in search of a mountain gorilla family. The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the gorillas’ movements.
Once you locate the gorilla family, you’ll spend an unforgettable hour observing them up close, watching their behavior, and taking photos. This intimate experience, gazing into the expressive eyes of these magnificent creatures, is truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. After the trek, return to the lodge to rest and share stories of your incredible experience.
Enjoy breakfast at the lodge before starting the journey back to Kampala, approximately a 7-hour drive. The route takes you through the picturesque Kigezi Highlands, with its mist-covered hills and terraced farms. Stop for lunch at Igongo Cultural Center and make another brief stop at the Equator Crossing in Kayabwe for last-minute souvenirs and photos.
Arrive in Kampala in the late afternoon, marking the end of your unforgettable 5-day Gorilla and Wildlife Safari in Uganda.
